Impact Leadership Institute is now accepting applications for the Leadership Advanced North Dakota (LAND) for nonprofit leaders. LAND Fellows are mid-career, nonprofit executive directors who seek to develop their leadership and management skills. This dynamic, peer-centered, professional learning experience will be led by faculty from the highly regarded La Piana Consulting.
In times of rapid change and increasing challenges, nonprofits need leaders with the ability to adapt to and take advantage of changing circumstances. LAND has been designed to support outstanding nonprofit leaders as they seek to strengthen their organizations. LAND’s goal is to create a network of empowered, innovative, and resilient executives, capable of navigating change and moving their organizations towards social innovation with much greater impact.
La Piana’s approach to organizational capacity building is different from the norm but is spot on because every person and every organization is different. Rather than the nuts and bolts of an organization, La Piana started from a leadership level, never defining leadership but instead teaching you to facilitate your own leadership.

Journey of a LAND Leader
Kick-Off Event – At a two-day retreat, Fellows become acquainted with each
other while gaining an understanding of the program, timeline, resources available,
and expectations for participation. The session will focus on the role of the nonprofit
board, the importance of the board chair’s role, and the dynamics between executive
and board. The participation of each organization’s board president for part of
a day is a powerful element of this kick-off event.
Learning Circles – After the kick-off, Fellows meet monthly for five sessions
to explore the role of a nonprofit leader. Each session will focus on a different
aspect of leadership in the nonprofit context; using a peer-centered learning model,
in which faculty guide dialogue among Fellows. Presentations and required readings
will be kept to a minimum, with emphasis placed on real-world knowledge and the
development of a learning community.
Capstone Event –LAND’s seven-month journey culminates in a two-day retreat
that engages fellows in reflection on what they have learned, and in discussion
of how the peer network will be furthered through an alumni program. A graduation
ceremony will recognize their achievements. Fellows will be invited to contribute
to the development of future LAND leaders by providing feedback to the faculty.
Board presidents will be important participants for part of this event.
Commitment to Participate
Each applicant commits to: actively and fully participating in the LAND Leadership
Program for the entire program by attending all LAND sessions: complete all assignments
between sessions.
Each applicant’s organization commits to: actively support the Executive Director’s
full participation in LAND; payment of the program tuition of $75, covering travel
expenses, and attendance by the board president at the Kick-Off and Capstone events.
The Impact Leadership Institute will provide meals and session venue. Travel, including
overnight accommodations for the Kick-Off and Capstone events, is the responsibility
of Fellows.
