About the GiveBack Initiative

Quick facts about the Impact Foundation
Background:
The overall goal of the GiveBack Initiative is to inspire greater and more effective charitable giving in the region. We are enthusiastically connecting donors of time, talent, and treasure with effective nonprofits of their choice in order to make a greater positive impact in our North Dakota and western Minnesota communities! Impact is working to improve and increase charitable giving by helping donors and nonprofits to become more effective in producing desired societal outcomes.

Impact GiveBack Initiative Components: Helping donors to improve and increase their charitable giving and improving nonprofit organizational results.

1. Impact Commissions First Wealth Transfer Study for the State of     North Dakota: $55.3 billion in estate taxes projected.
Impact released its North Dakota Wealth Transfer Study conducted by Paul Schervish and John Havens of Boston College’s Center on Wealth and Philanthropy to inspire more donors to partner with their favorite nonprofits in planning their estate.

2. Impact Institute for Innovation and Effectiveness
The Impact Institute provides customized training/consulting services on effective operational strategies, efficient fundraising systems, superior board governance, and volunteerism to help nonprofits more efficiently secure charitable donations and become more effective in producing societal outcomes. The Institute is currently serving 70 nonprofits in North Dakota and Minnesota.

The North Dakota Wealth Transfer Study commissioned by Impact estimates that about $67 billion will be given to charitable organizations by North Dakotans over the next 50 years. Even more charitable dollars will be available if North Dakota donors are inspired to more effectively plan their estates to provide more to their family and charities and less to government.

We are working to develop a highly trained “corps” of nonprofit charitable champions to generate greater donor awareness and use of effective financial planning tools available to increase individual charitable giving, improve personal retirement cash flow and investment risk exposure, and reduce/eliminate income and estate taxes. Many innovative nonprofits in our region are helping their donors utilize planning tools and resources to more effectively GiveBack their time, talent, and treasure.

3. Education Campaign to Promote Greater and More Effective GiveBack
We are conducting a public education campaign across North Dakota and western Minnesota designed to increase and improve charitable giving which includes the following activities:

A. Speaking tour, billboards, radio, TV, GiveBack website and links from other websites to the GiveBack site;

B. “Arming” nonprofits with actual case studies to distribute to their donors which include:
1. Simple, tax efficient charitable gift strategies for donors
2. Examples of charitable giving strategies that produce greater societal impact and increased donor satisfaction and fulfillment; and
3. Specific promotion of charitable gift annuities;

C. Impact GiveBack Champions Award Program:
1. Honors individuals who represent a GiveBack life and inspires others to GiveBack their time, talent and treasure.

4. Donor Impact Plans
Impact provides resources to design Donor Impact Plans which include a greater transfer of wealth to family and charity (less to government) and improved societal outcomes.

A. Tax Efficient Planning Assistance

Impact professionals work with donors and their trusted advisors to create tax efficient plans involving gifts to donors’ favorite charities during life and upon death. Impact technical assistance is provided free of charge because the majority of costs are underwritten by the Alex Stern Family Foundation, Dakota Medical Foundation and other Impact donors as part of their strategy to inspire greater and more effective charitable giving in the region.

B. Societal Impact Planning Assistance for Donors

Impact works with donors and their family members to better ascertain their charitable interests and objectives, and develop specific measurable strategies to achieve them in a highly leveraged manner. Impact often works to secure additional resources to increase and improve the donors’ ultimate societal impact. Impact hopes to inspire more thoughtful, proactive, innovative, solutions-oriented charitable giving.

5. GiveBack Website
The GiveBack website provides a one-stop online resource for donors to conveniently locate, review, and connect with nonprofits making a measurable impact in our communities. All tax exempt 501(c)(3)s and Governmental Entities in North Dakota and western Minnesota are welcome to display their key organizational information on the GiveBack website at no cost. The website provides resources for donors of time, talent and treasure to perform “key word” searches of nonprofits making a difference in their areas of charitable interest and geographic region.

In addition to providing donors with consistent, reliable operational information on nonprofit organizations in North Dakota and Minnesota, the GiveBack site contains “best practice” information for donors to improve the impact of their charitable giving. Online giving opportunities are also available to nonprofits interested in the site’s cost-effective, secure functionality. Secure online charitable event registration and credit card processing is another added website feature designed to reduce a nonprofit’s costs associated with managing these fundraising activities.

6. Impact Volunteerism Initiative
A. Training and resources will be offered to a limited number of nonprofits through the Impact Institute in order to build highly effective and efficient volunteer recruitment and retention programs.

B. Training will be provided to businesses on how to become “GiveBack” organizations. Employees of participating businesses will be encouraged to give their time, talent, and treasure and will be provided with innovative tools and techniques to GiveBack more effectively.

C. The GiveBack website will provide nonprofits with a web-based vehicle to increase and improve their volunteer workforce through offering our citizens (potential volunteer workforce) an easy-to-use searchable database of volunteer opportunities in their area of expertise and desired location. Potential volunteers will be able to create a “volunteer account” which allows them to receive automated email notifications of opportunities matching their volunteer interests and geographic area.

7. DMF Match Grant Fundraising Initiative
DMF offers match grant opportunities for donors to encourage and inspire greater support of health-related nonprofits within its service area. The DMF match program will be actively promoted on the GiveBack website and through other relevant channels.
