About the Impact Foundation

 
Impact Foundation is a donor-focused philanthropic organization that shares executive management and administrative services with Dakota Medical Foundation. Its mission is to lead donor-driven initiatives and connect entrepreneurial donors with superior-performing non-profit organizations to maximize societal impact. Impact is funded through generous support from Dakota Medical Foundation, Alex Stern Family Foundation, and Dakota Certified Development Corporation and other like-minded donors.

 

John Bertel - Vice Chair

John Bertel John is a prominent Fargo businessman and former chair of Dakota Medical Foundation.

Pat Traynor - Chair / Executive Director

Pat Traynor Pat Traynor, a North Dakota native, earned his B.A. in Economics and a law degree from the University of North Dakota. He began his career as an attorney with the law firm of Conmy, Feste, Bossart, Hubbard and Corwin, Ltd. in Fargo. In 1994, he was appointed as deputy director/general counsel of the N.D. Workers Compensation Bureau. Within a year he became the CEO of the Bureau where he spearheaded a major reform that resulted in the elimination of a $240 million unfunded liability and the building of a $350 million surplus.

Pat joined Dakota Medical Foundation as president in May 2000. The Foundation, with assets of $118 million, is committed to measurably improving access to healthcare services in the region with a specific emphasis on the health needs of children. The Foundation awards approximately $3.5 million in grants annually. Under his leadership, he reorganized the Foundation to maintain its public charity status, instituted key performance measures, implemented the Carver Model of Board Governance, launched a grantwriting program which has secured about $6 million and developed a results-oriented strategic plan. Pat established two other Foundations - Impact and Achievements Unlimited Foundations, DMF partner organizations designed to attract more resources and lead initiatives for both health and non-health related charitable purposes. He also launched the Impact Institute for Innovation and Effectiveness to provide technical assistance and resources to improve the outcomes of non-profit organizations in ND and MN.

He serves as a board member on the Anne Carlsen Center for Children Foundation, as vice chair of the North Dakota Safety Council and co-chair of the Ducks Unlimited Sponsor’s Committee in Fargo. Pat and his wife, Jamie, have three sons and live in Fargo.

Julie Haugen - Institute Director

Julie Haugen Julie Haugen, a native of Bemidji, Minnesota, earned her B.S and Masters in Public Administration from the University of North Dakota. Julie began her career in 2001 as the Assistant to the Director of the American Diabetes Association in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Julie joined Dakota Medical Foundation in 2004 as the Education Coordinator for the Dakota Communities Access Program (DCAP), a $2.6 million initiative to improve access to, and coordination of, healthcare services for the uninsured and underinsured in central and eastern North Dakota. In January 2005, Julie became the Project Manager of DCAP and assumed responsibility for directing all initiative activities. DCAP concluded in February 2007, having enrolled over 3,000 individuals in health coverage, securing $11.8 million in reimbursement for local healthcare facilities, and accessing more than $7 million worth of prescription medications for low-income individuals.

In March 2007, Julie was named the Director of the Impact Foundation Institute. The mission of the Institute is to provide nonprofit organizations with educational resources to measurably improve their organizational and fundraising effectiveness.

Jim Manly - Director of Volunteer Initiatives

Jim Manly Jim Manly, J.D. has thirty years experience in management with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota. He developed the Human Resources department into a full service operation, managing recruitment, legal compliance, training, salary and benefit administration, computerized information systems, and employee relations. Additional areas of management included quality management, risk management, and operations management.

Jim served nine years on the Board of Directors of the YMCA of North Dakota State University, was a charter member and past president of Frontier Toastmasters, and a charter member and past president of the Fargo Moorhead Human Resources Association. He is also a certified Zenger-Miller Achieve instructor.

Jim has been with the Impact Foundation since March 2007 researching and developing Volunteer Management. Jim and his wife Cindy have two adult daughters and reside in Fargo.

Laura Hicks - Marketing Coordinator

Laura Hicks Laura received her education from the University of North Dakota and Minnesota State University Moorhead. She joined Dakota Medical Foundation in 2003 as the Administrative Assistant for the Dakota Communities Access Program (DCAP), a $2.6 million initiative to improve access to, and coordination of, healthcare services for the uninsured and underinsured in central and eastern North Dakota. During this time she was responsible for handling all of the administrative functions associated with the grant as well as the maintenance of statistical grant data and federal reporting. Previous to working at DMF, Laura has worked for Dayton’s, Nordstrom, and Northwest Airlines.

In March 2007, she was named the Marketing Coordinator for Impact Foundation. Laura manages the foundation’s website and designs marketing and training materials including brochures, newsletters and e-newsletters for the foundation and nonprofit organizations supported by the Impact Institute. Laura serves as the communication liaison for media, contracted consultants, and nonprofit organizations.

Nathan Berseth - Director of Procurement Assistance Center

Nathan Berseth A lifelong North Dakota resident, Nathan is a native of Colfax, ND. In June 2007, he replaced Christine Martin as the Director of the Impact Procurement Assistance Center and the North Dakota American Indian Business Development Center.

Previous to working for Impact, Nathan resided in Bismarck, ND where he was United States Senator Byron L. Dorgan’s Economic Development Director. In this capacity Nathan traveled extensively throughout the state where he met with elected officials and business leaders to strategically grow communities.

After moving back to his hometown of Colfax, ND in 2004, Nathan started a minority owned, consulting and general contracting firm, The Aurora Group. Along with two partners, he formed a land development company, Wild Rice Land Development LLP. Nathan is a first generation farmer and serves on the ND Corn Council. He resides in his hometown of Colfax, ND.
