Mission

Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota exists to help low income individuals to: (1) know and enforce their legal rights in critical areas impacting basic subsistence, such as access to healthcare, food, safe and sanitary shelter, protection from violence, services for disabilities, public benefits and basic income; (2) obtain effective access to courts, forums, or administrative agencies to obtain justice; and (3) acquire and preserve benefits, services and entitlements necessary to become self-reliant to the extent permitted by individual circumstances and abilities.  LSNM staff also teaches, trains, and develops and distributes materials concerning the law, and about individual rights, responsibilities and remedies in order to prepare for, and prevent, legal problems that will adversely impact low income elderly and disabled persons.

Background

Staff in four offices work with 210 private Judicare attorneys to provide critically needed legal services for low income, elderly and disabled persons and their children, which:

·        Prevent the loss of housing from foreclosure for poor families;

·        Provide access to healthcare and health-related benefits, services and supports;

·        Protect battered spouses and children from domestic violence;

·        Help elderly persons obtain benefits and equipment to maintain self-sufficiency and avoid nursing homes;

·        Prevent wrongful evictions;

·        Help low-income families secure resources needed for basic subsistence;

·        Improve substandard and unsafe housing conditions;

·        Provide benefits and equal access for persons with disabilities;

·        Protect consumers from fraud and exploitation;

·        Promote securing services and safety for children; and

·        Help end homelessness, hunger, and hopelessness.
